JEE (Main/Advance) and NEET (UG) Entrance Examinations & Tips to Crack

For conducting Joint Entrance Examination (JEE, Main) from 2019 onwards to test efficiency of candidates for admissions to Undergraduate Engineering Programs at higher education institutes including NITs, IIITs, other Centrally Funded Technical Institutions (CFTI), Institutions funded by participating State Governments, and other Institutions in India, MHRD has established National Testing Agency under Society Registration Act 1860. Performance in JEE (Main) will decide candidates' eligibility for JEE (Advance) examination besides performance in 12th plus examination for deciding eligibility to Undergraduate programs of higher education institutes.

From 2020 onwards, JEE (Main) will be conducted twice before admissions in the next academic session and merit or ranking will be prepared based on best scores of aspirants if they appear in both examinations.

Eligibilities

There will not be any AIEEE examination from 2013 onwards as it is substituted by JEE-Main. JEE(Main) will be organized by the National Testing Agency. Admissions in the engineering courses (B.E./B. Arch, B. Planning) in NITs, IIITs and other Centrally Funded Technical institutes participating through Central Seat Allocation Board will be held based on the All India Rank of ZEE (Main) examination and subject to the condition of at least 75% marks in the 12th class, or be in the top 20 percentile in the 12th class / Qualifying examination conducted by the respective Boards. Qualifying marks for SC/ST candidates is 65% in the 12th class.

Age

Irrespective of age considerations, candidates who have passed class 12th / equivalent examination in previous two years (Example 2018, 2019; for appearing in 2020) can appear in JEE (Main) examination – 2020. However, they need to satisfy about their fulfilling the age limit requirements of the admitting Institutes.

Scheme of examination

As per the 2020 notification, once option for medium of question papers excercised it will be final. Hence, candidates should carefully opt from the English, Hindi and Gujarati, available medium of Question Paper.

JEE (Main)-2020 will be conducted in the below mentioned modes:

a) B.E. /B. Tech.: Computer Based
b) B. Arch:

Mathematics - Part I and Aptitude Test-Part II: Computer Based

Drawing Test – Part III: Pen & Paper Based (offline)
c) B.Planning:

Mathematics- Part I, Aptitude Test-Part II and Planning Based Questions Part III: Computer Based

Computer Based Test for B.E./B. Tech

There will be a total of 75 questions of 300 marks for all the subjects (Mathematics, Physics & Chemistry). There will be 20 questions in the MCQ format and 5 questions to be answered with numerical value for each subject. One mark for each wrong answer of a MCQ question will be deducted but no mark will be deducted for wrong answer with a numeric value. All the correct answers will be given 4 marks each.

Computer Based Test for B.Arch

There will be a total of 77 questions of 400 marks for all the subjects (Mathematics, Aptitude Test & Drawing Test). For mathematics, there will be 20 questions in the MCQ format and 5 questions to be answered with numerical value for each subject. One mark for each wrong answer of a MCQ question will be deducted but no mark will be deducted for wrong answer with a numeric value. All the correct answers will be given 4 marks each.Aptitude Test will have 50 questions for 200 marks. Drawing test will consist of 2 questions of 100 marks.

Computer Based Test for B.Planning

Pattern for b. Planning is similar to B. Arch except that Planning Based Objective type MCQs will replace Drawing test and there will be 25 MCQs of 100 marks.

Tips & tricks to crack JEE (Main)

1. If one tries to understand the pattern of questions asked, it will be revealed that major topics including Mechanics, Electricity and Magnetism, Electrostatics, Wave and Optics, Heat and Thermodynamics, Vector and simple mathematics and Modern Physics covers 3/4^th of Physics paper in JEE Main.
2. Don’t ignore Mechanics, Electricity & Magnetism and give proper emphasis to Electrostatics, Laws of Motion, Power and Energy, Work, Conservation Law, Semiconductor, Nuclear Physics, Rotation Motion, Radioactivity, Heat and Thermodynamics and Electromagnetic induction.
3. Try to clear doubts and strengthen the basics memorizing the formulas of mathematics and practicing the periodic tables of chemistry.
4. Learn the tricks to quickly solve the tricky questions so that questions are accurately answered within the given time.
5. Work on analytic skills and improve the analytic ability solving puzzles and Sudoku.
6. Attempt high ranking quality questions like mathematical first.

Candidates are allowed only two attempts for the JEE (Advanced) with the condition that candidate should have appeared for the Class XII examination for the first time in either 2019 or 2020, and not offered admission and admitted at an IIT before. Candidates should visit JEE (Advanced) notification for age limit prescribed by IITs.

For admission in IITs, the following diplomas of specified durations are recognized under eligibilities. These include a Diploma recognized by AICTE or a State board of technical education of at least 3 year duration, General Certificate Education (GCE) examination (London/Cambridge/Sri Lanka) at the Advanced (A) level and High School Certificate Examination of the Cambridge University or International Baccalaureate Diploma of the International Baccalaureate Office, Geneva.

Since category (for the reservation) entered in the JEE (Main) database by the candidate is used by the JEE (Advanced), no change in category will be allowed at later stage.

NEET (UG)

AIPMT is replaced by National Eligibility-cum-Entrance Test (NEET) now onwards. National Testing Agency (NTA) will conduct NEET in the coming years holding a common and uniform test for admission to the all seats (all quota) of undergraduate medical courses (MBBS/BDS BAMS/BSMS/BUMS/BHMS) in all medical institutions including those governed under any other law such as AIIMS, New Delhi, JIPMER and all AIIMS like Institutions. Qualifying in the NEET (UG) is needed to all Indian/Overseas Citizens of India intending to pursue Undergraduate Medical Courses from a foreign (Medical/Dental/Ayurveda/ Siddha/Unani/Homeopathy) Institute.

MCC/DGHS will conduct counselling for successful candidates under 15% All India Quota seats and all seats of Deemed Universities/Central Universities/Seats of ESIC & AFMC including Delhi University (DU), BHU, AMU, AIIMS & JIPMER will be conducted by the MCC/DGHS for Undergraduate Medical Courses. However, counselling to the seats under the control of other States/Universities/Institutions shall be conducted separately as per the notifications issued by the authorities concerned.

Candidates can submit their applications for NEET (UG) through “Online” mode by accessing NTA website ntaneet.nic.in and registering their mobile numbers and emails.

Examination Format

NEET (UG) is a Pen and Paper-based test. It will consist 180 multiple choice questions from Biology, Chemistry and Physics from curriculum of class XI & XII. Maximum time allowed to answer is 3 hours. Each question will get one minute time for answering it. Medium of question papers would be English, Hindi and nine other languages (Assamese, Bengali, Gujrati, Kannada, Marathi, Odia, Tamil, Telgu and Urdu).

Eligibilities

Age of the candidate appearing for NEET (UG) should be between 17-25 years. However, relaxation of 5 years is given for the candidates belonging to SC/ST/OBC-NCL category and PwD Candidates.

General category candidates with a minimum of 50% marks together in Physics, Chemistry and Biology/Bio-technology subjects of qualifying examination (intermediate or equivalent examination) are eligible to appear in NEET (UG) examination. A relaxation of 10% marks is given to candidates belonging to SC/ST/OBC (NCL) categories and 5% to PwDs.

Application fee for general category candidates is Rs. 1500/- whereas for economically weakward section (General) is Rs. 1400/- and SC/ST have to pay Rs. 800/-.

Few tips on NEET:

• Medical aspirants have to appear in a single test for admission to almost all medical colleges (except few) will be made based on the results of the common entrance test i.e. NEET.
• Since test is to be conducted by CBSE, it will have same syllabus as for plus II and also AIPMT and majority of the questions are likely from NCERT books.
• It will offer more scope (more seats) based on a single examination whereas medical aspirants earlier required to appear in about 17 different entrance tests of different states.
• Medical aspirant need to apply for a single test and it will result in saving costs on filling several forms for various examinations.
• Aspirants from certain states will have to labor little extra for few years since some of the state boards have to add few topics in their plus two syllabus to make it at par with CBSE.
• A single test will eliminate all hassles related to clashes in dates and timings of different tests .
• Emphasis on questions from organic and inorganic chemistry, mechanics and electrodynamics (Physics) is more useful for achieving good results in the entrance test.
• Memorizing and practicing formula based questions is important for scoring qualifying marks.
